Abstract

Background. The article is devoted to the problem of organization of supreme authority in Russia in the X century in the light of the East sources. Questions about Rus’ borrowing ready-made political forms from neighboring Nations and the origins of Russian statehood are still among the most controversial. The goal of the research is to solve the problem of the possibility of using the data of the Arab traveler Ibn Fadlan on the dual organization of power in Russia to characterize the control system of the first Russian princes.
Materials and methods. The subject assumes the analysis and comparison of data from Ibn Fadlan’s work, the Byzantine sources and materials of the Russian Chronicles containing information on the investigated problem.
Results. The author has consistently analyzed the information of sources on the use of Russian princes of the X century powers of authority in order to verify the findings of researchers who previously wrote on the problem, and identify the alleged
pairs of princes-co-rulers.
Conclusions. As a result of the study, it was possible to prove not only the absence of the diarchic control system (imported from outside or organically developed), but also the tradition of the system of dual power (as well as a long period of preservation of this system) in Russia in the X century.

Key words

Russia, Ibn Fadlan, Kiev, diarchy, Russian princes, Russian treaty with Byzantium
